How to Spot a Bat Infestation Before It Escapes Your Home

Spotting the Early Signs of a Bat Infestation
Indiana bats eat insects and are good to have outdoors, but when they roost in an attic or wall, their droppings and urine can stain ceilings and insulation and carry health risks. Knowing the subtle clues early can prevent a full‑blown infestation and keep your family safe.
- Unusual noises at night – A soft, high‑pitched chatter or fluttering sounds in attics, crawl spaces, or behind walls often signal a bat colony.
- Visible droppings – Dark, pellet‑shaped guano that clumps together is a clear indicator of bat activity. If you notice droppings in corners, on ceilings, or near vents, call for an inspection. Avoid sweeping or disturbing guano yourself, because the dust can carry the fungus that causes histoplasmosis.
- Stains and rub marks – Bats can leave dark, greasy rub marks around the gaps they use, and guano and urine can stain attic insulation and ceilings.
- Entry points – Inspect eaves, soffits, and roof vents for gaps or holes that could serve as bat entryways. Even a small opening can allow a few bats to slip in.
- Unusual odors – A strong, musty smell in your attic or crawl space can be a sign of accumulated guano and a potential bat problem.
Safe and Humane Removal
Once you suspect a bat infestation, it’s crucial to call professionals who use humane methods. Bats are removed by exclusion only: one-way devices let them leave on their own, and the work follows Indiana DNR timing: no exclusion from June 1 to August 15, while mothers may have flightless pups in the roost; exclusion is generally done between August 16 and May 31; and hibernating bats are not evicted in winter, since forcing them outside can kill them. Critter Outlaws offers:
- Free inspections and free estimates to find where bats are getting in and explain the exclusion plan before any work starts.
- Wildlife exclusion and prevention to seal entry points and keep bats out. See bat removal and exclusion for how it works.
- Wildlife-related attic cleanup and insulation replacement after roosting or droppings.
- Wildlife inspections to confirm the extent of the infestation and make sure all bats are safely out of your home.
